What is my internet speed? This has become a rather frequent question in the minds of many people. So how do you know what you internet speed is. Of course, your service provider mentions the speed, but that is hardly accurate and at times may be extremely different from the actual value. However, there are sites online wherein you can check the speed of your internet connection. One of the sites is called speedtest.net, which allows you to test the upload, and the download speeds by sending packets of information to its server located at a particular place (which can be chosen by you). What is does is it calculates the time taken for the packets to come back from the server and then based on that evaluates the internet connection. This concept of sending small packets of information is known as pinging. Therefore, in formal terms the sites pings a server and checks to see if the information is communicated two ways- from the site to the server and back. After doing this it compares it with the worldwide statistics and rates the speed on a scale of five stars-one meaning very poor and five meaning very good. In this age, each and everything can be done via the internet and hence the question “what is my internet speed” has become even more important. One can even say it has a direct impact on the lives of people. In the so called advanced countries it is imperative that everyone has a good internet connection as all activities are via that medium only. One can say it is as important as having a continuous electric supply. Nowadays everyone has realized the importance of having a good internet connection and hence this has resulted in service providers increasing their bandwidth and at the same time decreasing the prices comparatively. Because of this improvement the internet speeds worldwide have increased exponentially over the past few years. The introduction of Wi-Fi in many companies and also in certain houses has made it possible for many people to connect to the internet at the same time.
